October 25, 2009 - Fight against hunger in the Hub expands

Catherine D’Amato, 54, is president of the Greater Boston Food Bank, which supplies food to a network of 600 food pantries and other hunger relief agencies across Eastern Massachusetts. D’Amato recently sat down with Globe reporter Todd Wallack to talk about the food bank’s new building in Boston, which opened in April.

I am lucky to not be one of the estimated 321,500 people going hungry in Eastern Massachusetts. Every week, the Food Bank serves 83,000 of them. Estimates are that “need” is up 11% this year, at some agencies as much as 30%–40%. Part of the Food Bank’s mantra is “Everybody has a role in ending hunger.” So, I wonder, what’s mine?

The Greater Boston Food Bank has moved into a new, larger building in Boston that enables the organization to handle more food while being more energy-efficient and community-friendly – in time to help serve a dramatic growth in people needing assistance.

The Greater Boston Food Bank is rapidly moving into its much larger facility, known as the Yawkey Distribution Center. It was designed to distribute 50 million pounds of food a year.

The Greater Boston Food Bank, one of 200 food banks across the country, is nearly halfway through construction of a new 117,000-square-foot facility, a significant upgrade from its current 60,000-square-foot DC. “It’s a good news-bad news story,” GBFB COO Carol Tienken told Modern. “Unfortunately, we have to have a bigger facility. That’s the bad news. The good news is we have the support to do it.”

July 10, 2008 - City, state to spend $1.7M on street fixup near The Food Bank

The money will improve access to the facility. It will also help fund a full-scale reconstruction of South Bay Avenue, including installation of sidewalks, curbstones, street lighting, and storm drainage.
